What is Korean Street Toast?

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world. Koreans love toast! Toasted bread is topped with cheese or ham before it’s finished cooking, resulting in Korean Street Style Toast, a.k.a. Gilgeori-toast. That spicy tart flavor is so addictive that it’s hard to stop eating once you’ve started.

Toasted bread of this type is commonly consumed as a meal or snack. When I’m in the mood for a hearty, veggie-packed breakfast, this is my go-to meal. You can enjoy it with a cold glass of Pepsi or a hot brew from your Nespresso machine.

How to Make Korean Street Toast at Home

Korean street-style toast can be made at home in numerous ways. Making this recipe, which I’d like to share with you, is a breeze. Bread, vegetables, and eggs are the three most essential ingredients. Slices of ham, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, and ketchup can be added as additional toppings, just like the street vendors in Korea. This recipe combines a blend of savory ingredients and sweet flavors to create an easy, addicting and healthy breakfast that is also filling and satisfying.

What you need:

1/2 cup of zucchini, thinly sliced

1/4 cup of carrots, thinly sliced

1/4 cup red onions, thinly sliced

1/4 cup green onion

Two eggs

Two tablespoons butter

2 – 3 slices of white bread

Two pieces of cheddar cheese

1/2 teaspoon white sugar

salt and black pepper for taste

(Optional) One tablespoon Lingonberry Jam (IKEA)

How to make it:

Yield: 1 serving

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

  1. Combine zucchini, onion, spring onion, and carrot in a medium-sized bowl. Using your hands, gently knead the mixture to loosen it up. Toss in a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix the egg in with a spoon after cracking it open.
  2. A medium-sized nonstick skillet should be heated to medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and rub in 1 tablespoon butter, melting it until evenly distributed throughout the pan. Spread and flatten the vegetable and egg mixture in the skillet with a spatula.
  3. Slowly cook for 2 to 3 minutes over medium heat. Shape the patty into an almost rectangular shape and cook until it’s light brown and crispy on the underside. The size should be slightly larger than a slice of bread, but not by much.
  4. Use a spatula to flip it over; another tablespoon of butter can be added if desired. Meanwhile, heat a small amount of butter in a skillet and toast two slices of bread until they are just beginning to turn crispy and golden brown on both sides.
  5. Once the patties are ready (I sliced the patties into four pieces), place the toasted bread should be on a large plate.
  6. Sprinkle some sugar over the top of the toasted bread. The patties should be added at this point. Sliced cheddar cheese and lingonberry jam (by IKEA) can add extra flavor to the dish.
  7. After adding the second slice of toast, the dish should be served immediately. I usually cover the bread in baking paper, split it in half, then enjoy the warm sandwich with a freshly made Nespresso coffee cup, which I make at home.

Recipe Variation

It may not taste exactly as the Gilgeori-toast served by Korean food trucks, but it is possible to substitute and include different items into the omelet. The following ingredients are excellent choices: shredded cabbage, mozzarella cheese, chopped tomato, fresh spinach, honey ham slices, and mushrooms. If you like, you can also top the sandwich with some sliced avocado if you want.
